If you’re on a low income and getting paid income based benefits or tax credits, you could get a one-off payment of £500 to help with the cost of your first baby. This can be claimed before you have your baby or once your baby is born.

Child benefit is paid for each child you have under 16 years or under 20 if in full time non-advanced education or training. You can claim child benefit once your baby is born, the payments will depend on you and your partners income if over £50,000 per year.

Child tax credits
You could get Child Tax Credit for each child you’re responsible for if they’re: under 16,or under 20 and in approved education or training. You don’t need to be working to claim Child Tax Credit, but how much your get will depend on your circumstances. Working tax credits:
You could claim Working Tax Credit if you work and you’re on a low income. You may get working tax credits if you are working 16 hours, have a child or disability. Or 25 and over with no children. How much you will be paid will depend on several factors: Your and you partners income, how many hours you work, if you have children, if you have a disability, if you pay for childcare.
